Antigua and Barbuda Residence Permit in 2026
Antigua and Barbuda's Resident Permit is the country's formal long-term residence status for qualifying non-citizens. It is separate from a visitor entry stamp, work permit, student permit and citizenship.
The Immigration Department's public guidance describes both a general residence pathway and class-based categories for spouses, students, entrepreneurs/investors, homeowners/retired residents and people of independent means.
General four-year residence route
The Immigration Department residency page says a person who has been legally and ordinarily resident in Antigua and Barbuda for not less than four years may apply for a resident permit, provided the applicant also satisfies the character, lawful-entry and intention-to-reside requirements.
The Residency Permit FAQ describes the main worker/general category as Class A. For work-permit holders, it says the applicant should have:
- at least four years of lawful residence without interruption;
- a valid work permit at the time of the resident-permit application; and
- successive work permits without interruption where the qualifying history is built on employment.
A work permit therefore can be part of the history leading toward residence, but it does not itself grant resident status.
Residence classes
The Immigration Department FAQ lists the following resident-permit classifications:
| Class | Published category | Published qualifying period | |---|---|---| | A | Work permit holders / general residence | 4 years | | B | Marriage | 1 year after marriage | | C | Students | 1 year | | D | Entrepreneurs or investors | 2 years | | E | Homeowners / retired residents | 2 years | | F | Persons of independent means | 2 years in the category table |
The same FAQ contains additional text that is not fully consistent with the table for persons of independent means, including a document section referring to five years of lawful residence. Because of that conflict, applicants in Class F should obtain written current confirmation from Immigration rather than relying on a private summary.
Marriage-based residence
A person married to a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda for at least one year may apply under the published marriage residence framework, subject to the relationship and other requirements.
Marriage does not automatically make a non-citizen a resident from the wedding date. The applicant must keep immigration status lawful and apply for the resident permit. See the dedicated marriage and family residence guide.
Student residence
The Immigration Department distinguishes the ordinary student permit used to attend an educational institution from the resident-permit Class C framework. The FAQ says a student may become eligible for student resident status after one year, while general Class A residence is tied to the broader four-year requirement when the grounds become continuous.
Students are not generally permitted to work under student status. See Antigua student permits.
Investor and entrepreneur residence
The published Class D category covers entrepreneurs or investors after a stated two-year qualifying period involving work permits. This is not the same thing as buying citizenship through the Citizenship by Investment Programme.
A business owner should review both Labour work-permit requirements and Immigration residence requirements. Read the investor and entrepreneur residence guide.
Homeowner, retirement and independent-means categories
Classes E and F cover homeowners/retired residents and persons of independent means. The public FAQ points to prior lawful residence, property or financial-sustainability evidence and related documentation.
Because the official page contains inconsistent timing language for Class F, ReloTide does not state one universal minimum period for every financially independent applicant. See the independent-means and retirement residence guide.
Documents
The general residency page says an application can require:
- evidence of prescribed fee payment;
- police certificate from Antigua and Barbuda and from places where the applicant lived for more than six months;
- health certificate from a medical practitioner as directed by Immigration;
- evidence from statutory bodies showing required tax contributions;
- passport bio page;
- birth and/or marriage certificate; and
- any additional documents the Chief Immigration Officer requests.
Class-specific evidence is added on top. For example, work-permit holders need a valid approved work permit, while spouses need marriage and citizen-spouse evidence.
Validity
The Residency Permit FAQ says a resident permit may be granted for one to three years and that three years is normal unless a shorter period is specifically appropriate. Student resident status may be granted for shorter periods linked to study.
The permit is evidenced by a resident card, which the Department says is the official proof of resident status and is needed for re-entry as a resident on a commercial carrier.
Renewal
The Immigration Department says renewal should be filed three months before expiry. A continuous resident permit can generally be renewed for up to three years at a time, subject to continued eligibility.
The Department also says residence can be revoked in specified circumstances, including permanent departure, certain criminal or national-security grounds, false information and extended absence. The FAQ specifically mentions residence outside Antigua and Barbuda continuously for six months or more as a revocation ground.
Presence requirement
The FAQ says the applicant must show an intention to reside permanently and generally reside in Antigua and Barbuda for at least half of the time during which the residence permit is valid. This matters when planning extended absences.
Work rights
The general residency page says an approved resident certificate can entitle the holder to accept employment and have approved dependants reside with the holder. The FAQ, however, also distinguishes non-worker resident categories and says holders of a non-worker resident certificate should not seek employment.
Because work rights depend on the class and endorsement, do not assume every residence card carries unrestricted work permission. Confirm the exact conditions printed or attached to your permit.
Dependants
The residency page says approved dependants listed in the resident-permit application may reside with the permit holder. A certificate may later be varied to add or remove dependants or change an occupation, subject to Immigration approval.
The surviving or former spouse of a resident permit holder can face revocation after death or divorce, but the official page describes a three-month window to apply for residence in the spouse's own right if eligibility requirements can be met.
Citizenship after residence
The Residency Permit FAQ says a resident permit holder may apply for Antiguan citizenship after seven years of legal residence, subject to citizenship law and eligibility. This is different from the direct Citizenship by Investment Programme.
Residence does not guarantee citizenship automatically at seven years; it creates a potential eligibility history that must be tested against the citizenship rules in force when applying.
Fees and processing time
The public residency pages reviewed by ReloTide refer to prescribed fees but did not present one reliable current universal fee table for all classes in the accessible guidance. Do not invent a residence fee from an old private article.
Likewise, the Department does not publish one universal guaranteed resident-permit processing time across all classes. Character checks, health evidence, class-specific proof and requests for additional documents can affect timing.
