Belarus Family Reunification in 2026
Belarus family cases can lead to temporary residence or, where the statutory permanent-residence ground is met, permanent residence. There is no single universal “dependent visa” that gives every relative the same rights.
Which relatives matter?
The foreigner law uses defined family/close-relative concepts rather than an open-ended sponsorship rule. Core family categories include spouses, minor children and, in specified circumstances, dependent adult children and dependent parents/adoptive parents. The exact category matters because the temporary- and permanent-residence grounds are not identical for every relative.
A relationship should be proved with civil-status documents—such as marriage, birth or adoption records—and translated/legalised as required by the current Belarus procedure.
Temporary residence for family reasons
A qualifying spouse or close relative of a Belarus citizen or a foreigner permanently resident in Belarus can have a family-based temporary-residence ground. The territorial citizenship and migration division will assess the relationship and the live administrative checklist under the current 2026 stay rules.
Common evidence can include:
- valid passport/travel document;
- marriage/birth/adoption evidence;
- the Belarus citizen's or permanent resident's identity/status document;
- accommodation/address evidence; and
- means/support evidence where the particular family procedure requires it.
Temporary residence remains time-limited and should be renewed while the qualifying basis continues.
Permanent residence through family reunification
MVD's current guidance lists reunification with close relatives who are Belarus citizens among the permanent-residence grounds. The permanent-residence framework also provides family-reunification cases involving qualifying relatives of people permanently resident in Belarus.
For some extended/exceptional family cases, sufficient housing and lawful income supporting the household can be relevant. Do not assume that any relative of a citizen automatically receives PR.
Permanent residence is documented by a biometric residence permit and is legally distinct from citizenship.
Does a spouse automatically receive work rights?
No. A family relationship does not itself answer the work-permission question. A person on temporary residence should check whether a special work permission or an exemption applies before starting local employment. A permanent resident has broader labour rights under the foreigner law.
See Belarus work permits.
Family route and citizenship
Marriage to a Belarus citizen does not create automatic citizenship. The Citizenship Law contains ordinary naturalisation and special/registration rules, including exceptions for some permanently resident spouses who meet specified marriage/child conditions. The exact eligibility test should be applied from the current law rather than from a simplified “marry and get a passport” claim.
For the ordinary route, naturalisation generally requires five years of continuous residence after permanent residence, plus language, lawful-income and other statutory requirements. See permanent residence and naturalisation.
Children, parents and dependency
Age, disability, marital status and actual dependency can change whether an adult child or parent fits the statutory family definition. Applicants should document the exact relationship and dependency rather than relying on the word “dependent” informally.
A family member may also qualify independently through study, employment, property or another lawful ground; in that case the most stable route can depend on the family's facts.
Return to the Belarus immigration hub, read temporary residence, or compare European relocation options.
Editorial note: Verified against the current foreigner-law framework, MVD guidance and the permanent-residence procedure on 17 September 2026. Family definitions and supporting-document practice should be confirmed with the territorial migration division before filing.
