Bermuda College Student Residence in 2026

Bermuda's current residence framework includes a specific permission for a non-Bermudian adult who has been accepted as a full-time student at Bermuda College. This is narrower than the phrase “Bermuda student visa” can imply: it should not be treated as a general student residence category for any private course, overseas university program or remote study arrangement.

Who the route fits

The applicant should be at least 18 years old and accepted by Bermuda College as a full-time student. The residence permission is tied to genuine study, and the student must continue to meet academic and conduct requirements.

Current policy material expects an application to be filed roughly two months before the academic term begins so Immigration has time to assess the residence request.

Core documents

The current framework can require:

  • a valid passport and any required multi re-entry visa;
  • Bermuda College acceptance showing the program and duration;
  • evidence of full-time enrolment;
  • police certificate;
  • passport photographs;
  • private health insurance;
  • proof of sufficient funds for tuition, living costs and return travel;
  • medical evidence; and
  • the applicable residence-permission fee.

Immigration can request additional material where identity, finances or study plans need clarification.

Academic standing and renewal

The permission is normally aligned with the academic period rather than functioning as open-ended residence. Continuing students must remain full-time and in good standing. Official guidance has used a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale, together with appropriate attendance and conduct, when assessing continued student residence.

A renewal can therefore require a current letter from Bermuda College confirming enrolment and academic standing, not merely proof that the person once received an admission offer.

Does student residence allow work?

Student residence should not be treated as unrestricted employment authorization. Bermuda separates permission to reside from permission to work. A student who wants to take employment must check the applicable Work Permit rules and any student-specific limitations before starting work.

Likewise, the residence permission should not be repurposed as a founder or freelancer route. Business activity belongs under the Entrepreneur and Business Permits framework.

Remote study is different

The former Work From Bermuda certificate historically included a remote-study profile, but new applications to that program stopped on 28 February 2025. A person studying remotely through an overseas institution cannot assume that the Bermuda College residence permission applies, because this student category is tied specifically to Bermuda College.

Read the Bermuda remote-work guide and Annual Residence Permission guide if the plan is residence supported by foreign income rather than in-person Bermuda College study.

Family and longer-term residence

A student should not assume that residence permission creates an automatic route for adult partners, local employment or permanent residence. Family members need their own lawful basis, and long-term status such as a Permanent Resident's Certificate has separate statutory eligibility.

See Partner and Family Residence and Permanent Resident Status for those distinctions.

Tax and practical planning

A student with employment, business income or paid services should confirm Bermuda payroll-tax and immigration requirements before working. Bermuda does not impose a conventional personal income tax, but that does not make every activity tax-free or immigration-compliant.
