Canada digital nomad and remote-work visitor status in 2026

Canada does not publish a dedicated digital-nomad visa. IRCC's Tech Talent material states that digital nomads working remotely for an employer outside Canada can live and work remotely in Canada for up to six months at a time on visitor status without a work permit when they are not entering the Canadian labour market.

That is visitor status, not a residence permit and not a Canadian work permit. Depending on nationality, entry may require a temporary resident visa or an eTA, and the traveller must still satisfy normal temporary-entry requirements.

Foreign remote work versus Canadian work

The labour-market distinction is critical. IRCC separately warns that a visitor visa or eTA does not itself authorize work in Canada. Taking a job with a Canadian employer, switching into a Canadian role or otherwise entering the Canadian labour market may require work authorization.

If Canadian employment is the real plan, review the employer-specific work permit. If long-term residence is the goal, compare Express Entry, PNP and regional PR routes.

Staying longer

A visitor who wants to remain beyond current authorized status may need a visitor record. Extending visitor status does not convert it into general work authorization.
