El Salvador immigration pathways

El Salvador's official migration system distinguishes between temporary residence categories, work authorization, investor and business residence, rentista residence, and permanent residence.

Remote workers and digital nomads

The DGME temporary-residence catalogue does not publish a separate digital-nomad visa. Someone working remotely should not assume tourist status authorizes remunerated activity in El Salvador; the correct category depends on whether the activity is foreign-facing, local, independent, or tied to a Salvadoran business.

Freelancers, self-employed professionals and founders

DGME guidance for migrant workers expressly recognizes independent workers. The official temporary-residence catalogue also includes individual merchants, business people, shareholders and investors. Those categories are more accurate than inventing a startup-founder visa.

Investors and business people

El Salvador publishes separate temporary-residence categories for investors and business people. Consular investor visa processing also requires an investment-registration resolution from the Ministry of Economy.

Long-term residence

Permanent residence is a separate status handled by DGME. Applicants should distinguish residence status from work authorization and preserve compliance with renewal and absence rules.
