Jamaica extension of stay
Jamaica's current PICA framework uses extensions of stay rather than a single general temporary-residence permit for every short- or medium-term case. An extension, if approved, adds authorized time in Jamaica beyond the period granted at entry.
Applications should be made before the original landing period expires.
Visitor extension
PICA states that Commonwealth citizens can be allowed up to 12 months in visitor status and non-Commonwealth citizens up to six months. Visitor extensions require a valid passport, return ticket, a letter explaining the request, any required entry visa and the applicable fee.
Visitor status should not be treated as a work authorization.
Employment extension
Foreign nationals who are gainfully employed must regularize their immigration status to reflect the approved work period. PICA asks for evidence of the MLSS work permit, work-permit receipt, exemption or work-permit letter.
Student extension
Foreign students enrolled at an institution registered by the Ministry of Education are instructed by PICA to attend within two weeks of arrival for the required endorsement. The published evidence includes the institution's registration letter, passport, return ticket and any required entry visa.
Marriage and dependants
PICA provides separate extension categories for marriage exemption and dependency. A dependent extension applies to a foreign national who is not working and depends on a working spouse or qualifying parent. Relationship evidence and the principal applicant's status are required.
Digital nomads and remote workers
No dedicated digital-nomad extension category was found. Someone intending to perform paid work from Jamaica should confirm the work-permit position rather than relying on a visitor extension alone.
