New Zealand remote work for visitors in 2026

New Zealand does not have a dedicated digital-nomad residence visa. Instead, visitor conditions introduced from 27 January 2025 allow qualifying visitors to do remote work for an overseas employer or client.

What remote work is allowed

Remote work can include ordinary online tasks such as emails, coding, reports and meetings for an employer or client outside New Zealand. INZ says there is no separate limit on the amount of remote work that can be done while the visitor visa remains valid.

The remote work must not:

  • be for a New Zealand employer;
  • provide goods or services in New Zealand for gain or reward from a New Zealand business or person; or
  • require the visitor to be physically present at a New Zealand workplace.

Self-employed digital nomads can work for overseas clients under these conditions.

Visiting must still be genuine

INZ's operational instructions make an important distinction: remote work is not, by itself, a lawful purpose for visiting. It can be undertaken while the person is in New Zealand for another genuine visitor purpose, such as tourism or visiting family.

A person who wants to work for a New Zealand employer or provide services in the New Zealand market needs an immigration status that permits that work.

Tax is separate

Immigration permission does not decide tax liability. INZ notes that foreign-income exemptions may depend on days in New Zealand and tax-treaty status; taxpayers should use Inland Revenue rules for their own facts.
