Digital Nomad in Romania in 2026

Romania's digital-nomad route sits inside the long-stay visa framework for other purposes (D/AS) rather than a separate work permit for a Romanian employer.

Remote-work model

The route is for a third-country national who works remotely for a company registered outside Romania or remotely carries out activity through a qualifying company registered outside Romania, using information and communications technology.

Applicants must document the foreign employment/company relationship, the foreign company's current legal operation, the intended remote activity, fiscal-status evidence required by the visa process, accommodation, insurance and criminal-record documents.

Income requirement

Current Romanian MFA and IGI guidance requires means of subsistence from the remote activity of at least 3 times Romania's average gross monthly salary for each of the previous 6 months and for the period covered by the visa.

Because the average gross salary changes, do not hard-code a stale RON amount unless it is re-verified for the application date.

Residence after entry

Romanian law states that the first temporary-residence extension is 6 months for a digital nomad. Later extensions can be granted if the statutory conditions continue to be met.

That distinction matters: a page advertising a generic “one-year Romania digital nomad visa” can blur the entry visa and the residence-extension rules.

This immigration route should also be kept separate from Romanian tax-residence analysis, which depends on its own law and facts.
