Botswana Work Permit and Employment Residence in 2026
Botswana's ordinary employment framework uses a work permit and a residence permit as separate approvals.
The Government of Botswana work-permit page states that a work permit gives a non-citizen permission to work for reward in Botswana. If the person will stay beyond the visitation period, the residence-permit process applies as well.
Employee work-permit documents
The current official work-permit checklist for employees includes:
- job advertisement no older than six months;
- employment contract;
- signed work application letter;
- offer/appointment letter;
- CV;
- certified educational certificates;
- English translations and Botswana Qualifications Authority confirmation where required;
- certified passport biographical page; and
- two passport photos.
Professional fields can require extra clearance, including health professions, teaching, accounting, aviation and engineering.
Processing time and fee
Current official guidance states:
- work-permit service time: 14 working days;
- work-permit fee: BWP 1,500;
- work-permit renewal: BWP 1,500;
- replacement/duplicate: BWP 1,500.
The government also lists a late-renewal charge of BWP 500 plus BWP 20 per day after expiry.
These are work-permit charges, not the complete cost of visas, residence permission, professional licensing, translations or other compliance.
Renewal timing
The government work-permit page says a renewal application should be submitted six months before the work permit expires.
A renewal case uses the underlying work-permit requirements plus the contract-renewal letter and copies of the work and residence permits.
Residence permit
The current residence-permit service says a non-citizen who wants to stay in Botswana beyond the visitation period should apply for a residence permit.
The published steps are:
- complete the residence-permit application;
- submit it to an immigration office and pay the applicable fee;
- check the outcome; and
- if approved, receive the residence-permit endorsement in the passport.
The page gives a current service time of 30 working days.
Because the visible official checklist shows different documents/fees by applicant category, ReloTide does not apply one category's residence fee universally to every worker.
Employment visa is not the work permit
Visa-required nationals may also need Botswana's Employment Visa.
The official employment-visa page says the visa is for travel for employment, internship, research, work or voluntary services, and specifically notes that applicants need a valid work and residence permit to qualify.
That sequence means the employment visa should not be sold as a substitute for obtaining the underlying work/residence approvals.
Visitor status is different
The official Visitor's Visa says the holder must not work for, provide services to, or sell goods to businesses or the public in Botswana.
A job candidate visiting Botswana should therefore distinguish interviews/business exploration from actually starting paid work.
Remote work
Foreign payroll or overseas clients do not automatically convert visitor status into work authorization. If the work is habitually performed from Botswana, obtain official classification rather than relying on a “digital nomad” label that Botswana does not publish.
See the remote-work guide.
Long-term residence
Employment and residence history can be relevant to permanent residence. The general official rule starts at five years of lawful continuous residence and includes additional character, contribution, standing and means requirements.
