Botswana Immigration for Work, Investors, Remote Workers and Entrepreneurs in 2026

Botswana separates entry visas, work authorization, residence permission, and permanent residence. A business or investment visa is not the same as permission to work and live in Botswana, and company registration alone does not grant immigration status.

The main official authorities are the Department of Immigration and Citizenship for visas and residence, and the Department of Labour and Social Security for work permits. The Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) can facilitate government processes for accredited investors through its Botswana One Stop Service Centre (BOSSC).

Verified 18 September 2026: Botswana's current official immigration and visa catalogues do not publish a dedicated national digital-nomad visa, startup visa or freelancer visa. Those search terms need to be mapped to Botswana's real work-permit, investor/business, residence and permanent-residence rules.

Main Botswana pathways

| Route | Best fit | Core rule | | --- | --- | --- | | Employment work and residence | Foreign employee | Work permit plus separate residence permission; employment visa is an entry visa for visa-required nationals | | Investor / entrepreneur | Business owner or investor operating for profit | Investor work-permit evidence plus residence; business/investment visas do not replace these approvals | | Remote work / digital nomad | Foreign employee or contractor working online | No dedicated nomad programme; visitor status should not be assumed to authorize ongoing work | | Freelancer / self-employment | Independent professional or solo operator | No standalone freelancer visa; actual business/work structure determines the permits required | | Permanent residence | Long-term resident or qualifying investor | General rule starts at five years lawful continuous residence; official guidance provides an investor exception |

Work permit and residence permit are separate

The official Work Permit Application describes the permit as giving a non-citizen permission to work for reward or invest in Botswana for profit. The published work-permit fee is BWP 1,500, and the government gives a service time of 14 working days.

A person staying beyond the visitation period also needs a residence permit. The current residence-permit page gives a service time of 30 working days and says the approved permit is endorsed in the passport.

For visa-required nationalities, the official Employment Visa is a further entry document. Crucially, that page says an applicant needs a valid work and residence permit to qualify, so the employment visa should not be marketed as the document that creates the underlying work right.

Investors and entrepreneurs

Botswana does not use a single “startup visa” label. Instead, the work-permit system has a specific investor evidence track, and the visa system separately includes Business Visa and Investment Visa categories.

For an investor work permit, the official government checklist asks for items such as:

  • proof of investment and bank evidence;
  • business premises/lease;
  • company registration documents;
  • employee list and identity/permit information;
  • valued assets;
  • trade licence;
  • company profile; and
  • current bank statement.

The Ministry of International Relations currently lists Business Visa — BWP 700 and Investment Visa — BWP 1,500. A Business Visa is for prospective investors, entrepreneurs or traders exploring opportunities, attending business meetings/conferences and negotiating contracts. It is not itself a residence or work permit.

BITC's BOSSC can facilitate entry visas, work and residence permits, and work-permit exemptions for accredited investors. That facilitation is valuable, but BITC accreditation itself is not an immigration status.

Is there a Botswana digital nomad visa?

No dedicated national digital-nomad or remote-worker visa is published in Botswana's current official visa/residence catalogue.

This matters because Botswana's official Visitor's Visa expressly says the visa remains valid only if the holder does not work for, provide services to, or sell goods to businesses or the public in Botswana.

That wording does not answer every foreign-employer remote-work scenario, but it makes one point clear: visitor status should not be marketed as a general remote-work authorization. A remote professional planning habitual work from Botswana should obtain an official classification for the real arrangement.

Freelancer and self-employment searches

Botswana does not publish a standalone “freelancer visa”.

A freelancer who creates and runs a Botswana business may fall into the investor/business work-permit framework, while someone locally employed uses the ordinary employee work permit. Company registration, trade licensing, tax registration and immigration permission remain separate legal steps.

Permanent residence

The official permanent-residence guidance gives a general eligibility framework including:

  • lawful continuous residence for at least five years;
  • good character;
  • significant contributions to Botswana;
  • good standing in society; and
  • sufficient means to support the applicant and dependants.

The current fee is BWP 3,000 per applicant.

The same official page contains an important investor rule: an investor may apply even after less than five years. That is an eligibility exception, not an automatic “golden visa”. The investor still has to apply and provide extensive company, investment, employee, premises, financial and tax evidence.

The government page currently contains two different timing statements—56 working days and six months—so ReloTide does not collapse them into a false single guarantee.

Read the Botswana permanent-residence guide.

Naturalisation is a separate process

Permanent residence is not citizenship. Botswana's current naturalisation page says a general applicant must have resided in Botswana for an aggregate period of at least 10 years and continuously for the 12 months immediately before applying.

That is a separate nationality process and should not be confused with the permanent-residence investor exception.
