Burkina Faso Work Permit and Employment Rules in 2026

Burkina Faso changed its labour framework in 2026. The government summary of the Labour Code adopted on 6 May 2026 says the new rules strengthen controls on hiring non-national workers.

For a non-national non-resident worker, the government identifies three key requirements before ordinary employment starts:

  1. prior authorization from the public employment service for the employer to recruit the worker;
  2. the worker must hold a work permit; and
  3. the employment contract must be validated before any performance of the contract begins.

These are labour requirements. The worker must also have lawful immigration entry/stay status.

Work permit is not the same as the visa

Burkina Faso's visa system governs entry and stay. Labour authorization governs the right to work.

The official short-stay page makes the distinction explicit: even a short-stay visa issued for business does not authorize work without prior authorization from the minister in charge of labour.

Mandatory work card

The National Employment Agency's official work-card portal states that the carte de travail is mandatory. The public-service page describes the card as a worker record established from the individual work-card application form.

As of the 14 September 2026 public-service update, the procedure is listed as free, with a variable processing period.

The work card should not be confused with a residence permit.

What changed in 2026?

The government's Labour Code announcement specifically highlights:

  • prior public-employment-service authorization for an employer recruiting a non-national non-resident;
  • a work-permit obligation; and
  • validation of the non-national non-resident worker's employment contract before work begins.

Because the Labour Code was promulgated in June 2026, employers should use current implementing guidance rather than relying on older summaries of the previous code.

Which visa should an employee use?

Visa choice depends on nationality, intended duration and the migration authority's assessment.

A short-stay visa cannot exceed 90 days. For a stay beyond 90 days, the foreigner needs qualifying long-stay/residence documentation. The long-stay application asks for evidence of purpose, medical status, support or sufficient income and health insurance.

A long-stay visa does not replace the labour approvals needed to work.

Business visa is not a work workaround

The current short-stay business visa is published at 77,000 CFA francs for single entry and 93,500 CFA francs for multiple entry.

That can support legitimate business travel, but the same official page expressly says short-stay visa holders do not gain the right to work without prior labour authorization.

Remote employee of a foreign company

Burkina Faso does not publish a dedicated remote-worker visa. A foreign payroll or overseas client relationship should not be treated as proof that local work rules do not matter.

Read the remote-work guide.

Long-term stay

If employment requires residence beyond 90 days, use the long-stay and residence guide alongside the labour process.
