Z Visa, Foreigner's Work Permit and Work Residence in China — January 2025 snapshot

China's ordinary employment pathway is not a single document. For a foreign national who will work in China, the core sequence is the Foreigner's Work Permit process, a Z visa for entry where required, and a work-type residence permit for lawful residence.

January 2025 process

From 1 December 2024, China integrated foreign work-permit information with the social-security-card system. Work-permit applications, extensions, changes and cancellations were processed online through the Service System for Foreigners Working in China. A person holding the Notification Letter of Foreigner's Work Permit could apply for a Z visa, then apply after entry for the appropriate residence permit.

The 2024 official work guide lists supporting materials such as work-qualification evidence, authenticated education or professional credentials, a no-criminal-record certificate, health documentation, a job contract or employment certificate, a passport and photographs.

Employer linkage matters

This is an employment pathway, not an open self-sponsored skilled-worker visa. The job and employer are central to the work-permit process. A business visitor, tourist or other visitor should not assume that entry status substitutes for work authorization.

Remote work and freelancing

The Tier-1 sources reviewed for the January 2025 snapshot do not establish a national digital-nomad, remote-work or open freelancer visa. Someone who will perform local employment should use the work-permit framework; foreign-source remote work should not be assumed lawful merely because the person holds a visitor visa.
