Iceland collaboration and service-contract work permits in 2026
This is an exceptional specialist category, not a general freelancer or contracting residence route.
Service contracts
For a service-contract case, the foreign company providing services in Iceland must not operate an Icelandic branch. The foreign employee's wages while in Iceland must comply with Icelandic law and applicable collective agreements.
There must be a service agreement between the foreign service company and the Icelandic user company, and the contract or certified annex must show why the particular specialist is necessary to perform the service.
Official guidance states that permits in this category are not granted for general non-professional work.
Collaboration agreements
The collaboration branch is limited to teaching, academic or scientific work. There must be a qualifying cooperation agreement between the Icelandic and foreign employers, and the worker must have completed the university studies required for the work.
Duration and settlement relevance
The related residence permit is generally not granted for longer than one year on the same contract, and it cannot extend beyond the work permit.
This route can confer family-reunification rights and can form a basis for permanent residence when the separate settlement requirements are met.
