Iceland permanent residence in 2026

The general national rule normally requires four years of continuous residence on residence permits that can form the basis for permanent residence.

"Continuous" does not mean a person can never travel. The ordinary rule is that the applicant has not resided abroad for more than 90 days in total in each permit year, while also keeping residence permits renewed on time.

Language requirement

Applicants normally must show one of the following:

  • completion of at least 150 lessons of Icelandic at an acknowledged educational institution with at least 85% attendance; or
  • an accepted Icelandic-language assessment.

Exemptions can apply in specified circumstances, including some age, medical and Icelandic-medium education situations.

Support requirement

Applicants must show that they have supported themselves legally and have secure means going forward.

The current monthly reference amounts are ISK 259,951 for an individual and ISK 415,922 for married couples, before tax.

Important exceptions to the four-year baseline

A qualifying spouse or cohabiting partner of an Icelandic citizen may apply after three years of continuous residence in the relevant circumstances.

Other special rules exist for certain children of Icelandic citizens, people who completed an Icelandic doctoral degree and former students who later hold qualifying settlement-counting permits.

Permanent residence is different from EEA permanent residence rights, citizenship and renewal of a temporary permit.
