Permanent Residency Status for Foreign Investors in India

India's Ministry of Home Affairs maintains a Permanent Residency Status (PRS) scheme for qualifying foreign investors. It is separate from the ordinary Business Visa.

Investment and employment thresholds

The official scheme requires qualifying investment under the FDI route of at least:

  • ₹10 crore brought within 18 months, or
  • ₹25 crore brought within 36 months,

and the investment must result in employment for at least 20 resident Indians in every financial year.

Status and family

The published scheme provides PRS for 10 years with multiple entry, with provision for a further 10-year extension. Qualifying spouse/dependants may also receive PRS under the scheme.

The official rules also describe residential-property and dependant employment/study benefits, subject to the scheme and other Indian law.

Important limitations

This is a high-threshold investor status, not a generic golden visa and not citizenship by investment. It also does not mean every shareholder or startup founder qualifies: the FDI amount and employment conditions must be met.

Entrepreneurs who do not meet PRS thresholds may instead need the Business Visa for qualifying venture-establishment and business activity.
