Employment Visa in India
India's Employment Visa (E Visa) is the core route for foreign nationals coming to India for skilled employment.
Who the route covers
The Ministry of Home Affairs describes the route for a highly skilled and/or qualified professional engaged or appointed by an Indian company, organisation, industry or undertaking on a contract or employment basis. It is not intended for routine, ordinary, secretarial or clerical jobs.
For the January 2025 snapshot, the official work-visa FAQ states a general salary floor in excess of US$25,000 per year, with listed exceptions including ethnic cooks, certain language teachers/translators and embassy/high-commission staff.
Independent consultants and self-employment
The same official guidance expressly includes self-employed foreign nationals providing engineering, medical, accounting, legal or other highly skilled services as independent consultants, where the provision of those services by foreign nationals is permitted under Indian law. This is a narrow professional route, not a generic open freelancer visa.
Duration and employer linkage
The permitted validity depends on the category and assignment. The official guidance provides longer treatment for certain government/collaboration experts and IT/ITES personnel, with other employment generally tied to the assignment and extendable subject to the rules. The sponsoring employer or organisation is identified in the visa framework.
Remote work safeguard
The official visa materials reviewed for this January 2025 snapshot do not establish a dedicated national digital-nomad or open remote-work visa. A foreign employee or independent professional should not treat tourist or business status as a substitute for the Employment Visa where Indian employment or locally supplied professional services are involved.
