Ireland Stamp 0 and independent means in 2026
Stamp 0 is a temporary immigration permission used in several specific situations, including retirement or residence as a person of independent means, certain visiting academics and some dependent adult relatives.
It is not Ireland's version of a digital-nomad visa.
Retirement and independent means
Current ISD retirement guidance says a person of independent means who wants to retire to Ireland should have:
- €50,000 individual annual income; and
- access to a substantial lump sum for major unexpected costs, with government guidance using the price of a residential dwelling as an example.
Financial evidence must be independently verified, and comprehensive private medical insurance is required.
The route is discretionary and document-heavy. Meeting a single income figure does not guarantee approval.
Apply before moving
For retirement/independent means, the applicant applies for permission before arriving to reside in Ireland. Visa-required nationals then need the appropriate long-stay visa after approval. After arrival, the permission must be registered and an IRP issued where applicable.
A visitor entry does not convert automatically into Stamp 0 retirement permission.
Work and business restriction
The Stamp 0 conditions state that the holder must not work or engage in any business, trade or profession unless this is specifically allowed in the permission letter.
That restriction matters for retirees, consultants, company owners and remote workers. Having an Irish company or overseas clients does not automatically remove the Stamp 0 restriction.
Public services and insurance
Stamp 0 normally requires full financial self-sufficiency. The holder cannot rely on public benefits or publicly funded health services and must maintain private medical insurance according to the permission conditions.
Not a digital-nomad route
Ireland does not publish a general digital-nomad residence permission. Someone whose real plan is to work while living in Ireland should examine the actual work, entrepreneur or other immigration routes instead of treating Stamp 0 as a workaround.
Tax is separate
Being granted Stamp 0 does not answer whether someone becomes Irish tax resident, domiciled, or taxable on foreign income. Immigration status and tax residence use different legal tests.
