Ireland immigration and residence options in 2026

Ireland uses several different immigration systems for work, entrepreneurship, independent means, study, family and long-term residence. The most important distinction is that an employment permit, visa, immigration permission and Irish Residence Permit are not the same thing.

For many non-EEA workers, the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment issues the employment permit, while Immigration Service Delivery controls entry visas, immigration permission and registration.

Skilled employment

The Critical Skills Employment Permit targets strategically important occupations and highly remunerated roles. For 2026, DETE publishes a €40,904 threshold for listed occupations requiring a relevant degree, a €36,848 recent-graduate threshold in qualifying cases, and €68,911 for the higher-remuneration route.

The General Employment Permit covers a wider range of eligible occupations. Its standard 2026 minimum annual remuneration is €36,605, with lower thresholds for certain care/agri-food roles and a separate recent-Irish-graduate threshold.

Neither permit should be described as a residence card by itself. Visa-required nationals may still need an entry visa, and people living in Ireland must register the immigration permission attached to their stay.

Startup founders

Ireland's Start-up Entrepreneur Programme remains the principal immigration route for qualifying innovative founders. The principal applicant needs an innovative business proposal and €50,000 funding. The application fee is €350.

The former Immigrant Investor Programme closed to new applications in 2023. It should not be marketed as a current Irish golden visa.

Independent means and retirement

Stamp 0 can be used for certain people of independent means, including retirees who meet the published conditions. Current ISD guidance for retirement indicates €50,000 annual individual income plus access to a substantial lump sum. Stamp 0 generally does not permit employment, business, trade or a profession.

Study and graduate transition

Stamp 2 students can generally work up to 20 hours per week during term and 40 hours during specified holiday periods. Eligible Irish graduates can move to Stamp 1G under the Third Level Graduate Programme: typically 12 months for NFQ Level 8 and up to 24 months for Level 9 or above, subject to programme limits.

Family and long-term residence

Ireland revised its Non-EEA Family Reunification Policy in 2026, with important changes taking effect on 12 June 2026. Sponsor category, waiting period, finances and accommodation evidence can differ sharply between Critical Skills, General Employment Permit and other statuses.

Long Term Residency is also narrower than the phrase suggests. Current ISD guidance requires 60 months of qualifying registered residence based on employment permits; simply living in Ireland for five years does not automatically qualify.

No dedicated digital-nomad residence route

Ireland does not publish a dedicated digital-nomad residence visa. Ordinary visitor permission cannot be used as a substitute for residence or unrestricted remote work. Short-stay business rules permit only defined activities and limited short work in specific circumstances.
