United Kingdom immigration and visa options in 2026
The UK does not have one general immigration visa. The right route depends on whether you have sponsored employment, exceptional talent, a qualifying founder venture, a recent degree from a listed overseas university, a scale-up job, an overseas-company assignment, UK study, a qualifying family relationship or only a short visit.

Important 2026 changes and distinctions
For most new Skilled Worker applications, the usual salary floor is £41,700 or the going rate, whichever is higher, and medium-skilled occupations face additional restrictions. Health and Care Worker remains a distinct sub-route, but new overseas applications for care workers and senior care workers closed on 22 July 2025.
Global Talent can use an endorsement or a specifically listed prestigious prize. Innovator Founder requires endorsement of an innovative, viable and scalable venture; it is not the old Tier 1 Investor or Entrepreneur system, and there is no one universal fixed investment amount for entry.
HPI is for recent graduates of listed overseas universities; UK universities are not eligible, and HPI is not a settlement route. Scale-up starts with a six-month sponsored stage before later work flexibility. Global Business Mobility is for temporary overseas-company assignments and is not a settlement route.
Student and Graduate are separate permissions. For non-doctoral Graduate applicants, GOV.UK currently gives 2 years for applications made by 31 December 2026, falling to 18 months from 1 January 2027; doctoral graduates receive 3 years.
For many new partner applications the usual family-route minimum income requirement is £29,000, with important transitional, benefit-based and human-rights exceptions.
The UK has no dedicated digital-nomad visa. Visitor rules allow remote activity for an overseas job only when it is secondary to a genuine permitted visit; they do not permit living in the UK through frequent or successive visits.
Business ownership is not immigration permission
Companies House incorporation, directorship, tax registration or ownership of a UK company does not by itself give permission to live or work in the UK. Immigration eligibility must be established under a route that actually permits the intended activity.
