UK remote work and Standard Visitor options in 2026
The UK does not publish a dedicated digital-nomad visa. A Standard Visitor can carry out specified visitor activities, and the Immigration Rules now expressly allow some remote activity connected with overseas employment, but that does not turn the visitor route into a remote-worker residence permit.
The controlling rules are the Standard Visitor guidance, Appendix Visitor: Permitted Activities and Appendix V: Visitor.
Remote work can be incidental, not the main reason for the trip
Paragraph PA 4 of the permitted-activities rules allows a visitor to undertake activities relating to their overseas employment remotely from the UK, provided remote working is not the primary purpose of the visit.
In practical terms, incidental work such as handling overseas emails, calls or remote meetings can fall within the visitor rules when the trip is genuinely for another permitted purpose. The Home Office's current visit caseworker guidance tells decision makers to examine whether the proposed stay is really dependent on ongoing remote work and whether the person is genuinely employed overseas.
This is not a general permission to relocate to the UK while working online.
What a Standard Visitor cannot use the route for
A visitor cannot normally:
- take paid or unpaid employment for a UK company;
- fill a role within a UK organisation;
- establish or run a UK business as a self-employed person;
- provide goods or services in the UK outside the activities specifically permitted by the Visitor Rules; or
- use frequent or successive visits to live in the UK for extended periods or make the UK their main home.
If productive work in the UK is the real purpose of the stay, a work or business route is usually the relevant immigration framework instead.
Business activities that can be permitted
The Standard Visitor rules permit defined business activities. Examples published by GOV.UK include attending meetings, interviews, conferences and seminars, negotiating and signing contracts, attending trade fairs for promotional purposes, receiving qualifying work-related training and certain other activities connected to overseas employment.
See the live GOV.UK business-visitor guidance before relying on a particular activity. Some permitted paid engagements are also possible under separate visitor rules, but they are narrowly defined.
Length of visit
A Standard Visitor can usually stay for up to 6 months per visit. Longer-validity multi-entry visitor visas do not create residence permission; each stay still has to comply with the Visitor Rules and the genuine-visitor requirement.
The genuine-visitor test includes showing that you will leave the UK at the end of the visit and will not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits.
Is there a UK digital nomad visa?
No dedicated national immigration route is currently published under that name. Search terms such as “UK digital nomad visa” or “UK remote work visa” often describe the user's intent rather than an actual Home Office visa category.
For someone whose real objective is to live and work in the UK rather than make a temporary visit, possible routes depend on the facts and can include:
Owning or incorporating a UK company does not by itself give immigration permission to live or work in the UK.
Remote work and tax are separate questions
Visitor immigration permission and tax residence are separate legal issues. A visitor who performs overseas work while physically in the UK may need separate tax analysis depending on the duration and facts. This page addresses immigration-route boundaries only.

Editorial note: Visitor rules are fact-sensitive. Remote work that is acceptable as a secondary activity can become problematic if it is effectively the reason for being in the UK or the visitor is using repeated stays as a substitute for residence.
