South Korea student-to-work immigration in 2026

A D-2 Student status permits study under the conditions of that status. Graduation does not automatically convert D-2 into unrestricted Korean employment authorization.

A typical graduate pathway is:

D-2 study → D-10 job seeking → qualifying work status such as E-7

The precise sequence depends on the graduate's degree, institution, job and immigration eligibility.

D-10 after graduation

The Ministry of Justice expanded D-10 job-search flexibility for eligible graduates from Korean universities. The reform increased the possible job-search period from a maximum two years to up to three years, with extensions generally changing from six-month to one-year periods.

This gives qualifying graduates more time to search, but it does not guarantee that every D-2 graduate qualifies for the full three years.

Internship flexibility

For the covered D-10 graduate group, the reform removed the old total internship-duration cap and increased the maximum internship with one company to one year.

Internships still must comply with the D-10 framework. They are not a substitute for the correct full-employment status when a person begins a normal permanent role.

Moving into E-7 employment

When a graduate accepts a qualifying Korean professional job, the applicant normally needs to change to the relevant employment status before performing the full employment activity.

For many professional roles, that can be E-7. The job still has to fit an approved occupation and meet the E-7 qualification, employer and wage rules.

Science and engineering graduate reforms

The Ministry of Justice has also continued targeted reforms for science/engineering international students, including changes to part-time-work conditions and talent-retention policies.

These targeted policies should not be generalized to all majors or all universities without checking the current rules.

D-2 work while studying is different

Part-time work authorized during D-2 study follows separate student rules. Permission to do limited student work does not mean the student can simply continue full-time employment after graduation without changing status.

Startup option

A graduate planning a technology startup may compare D-10-2 startup preparation and D-8-4 startup status instead of a normal E-7 employment route.

Long-term settlement

D-2 and D-10 are not automatic permanent-residence categories. Later F-2/F-5 eligibility depends on the status obtained, duration, income/integration and the specific permanent-residence category.
