South Korea permanent residence F-5 in 2026
F-5 Permanent Resident is not one single automatic conversion after a fixed number of years. Korea maintains multiple F-5 categories for people with different residence histories, family relationships, talent profiles and investment backgrounds.
General long-residence category
Korea Immigration Service's Visa Navigator includes a general permanent-resident category for qualifying foreigners who have stayed in Korea for more than five years.
That headline does not mean every five-year stay qualifies. The underlying status history and the separate F-5 requirements still matter.
Basic permanent-residence standards
Korea's permanent-residence framework includes requirements concerning matters such as:
- good conduct;
- ability to maintain a livelihood;
- Korean-language ability and understanding of Korean society/culture; and
- category-specific residence, income, investment, education or family conditions.
The exact standard depends on the F-5 subcategory.
Talent and professional categories
Visa Navigator lists several talent-related F-5 categories, including highly qualified academic/scientific personnel, certain point-system residents and other people with recognized abilities.
The F-2-T Top-Tier framework is especially important in 2026: current Ministry of Justice material states that qualifying F-2-T holders can become eligible to apply for F-5 after three years.
Eligibility to apply is not guaranteed approval.
Investors
Korea has multiple investor-related permanent-residence categories. Those investment-immigration programs have their own minimum investment, holding-period and family rules and should not be confused with ordinary Corporate Investor D-8.
A D-8 company investment does not automatically create F-5 merely because the business continues operating.
Skilled workers
A worker on E-7 may eventually fit a permanent-residence category depending on residence history and qualifications, but E-7 itself is temporary employment status.
Do not treat an E-7 contract as an automatic five-year countdown to F-5 without identifying the actual permanent-residence category.
Students and job seekers
D-2 study and D-10 job seeking are preparatory/temporary statuses. A graduate normally progresses into a qualifying work or residence status before settlement becomes realistic.
See Student to Work and Job Seeker D-10.
Permanent resident card renewal
Korea introduced a permanent-resident certificate renewal framework. F-5 residence may be permanent in immigration status, but the physical permanent-resident card is not necessarily indefinite and renewal rules still apply.
F-5 is different from citizenship
Permanent residence and Korean nationality are separate legal statuses. Naturalization has its own requirements and should not be described as automatic after receiving F-5.
Return to the Korea immigration hub, explore work visas, and review the methodology.
