South Korea Top-Tier Talent F-2-T in 2026

F-2-T is Korea's Top-Tier residence status for specified exceptional talent. It is materially different from a normal E-7 work visa and from the broader F-2-7 points-based residence framework.

Who the route targets

The Ministry of Justice originally focused the route on top foreign talent in strategic advanced-industry fields and expanded it in 2026 to additional outstanding science and technology researchers.

Official 2026 material describes qualifying evidence such as internationally recognized awards, highly cited or leading research, important international patents/standards, high-value commercialization achievements, and senior research leadership at globally ranked universities, companies or public research institutions.

There are also expert-review mechanisms for candidates whose achievements are considered equivalent or show exceptional potential.

K-Tech Pass

The K-Tech Pass links industry talent recruitment with F-2-T immigration support. In July 2026, the government announced additional qualitative-evaluation and government-scholar/researcher-linked tracks.

F-2-T under K-Tech Pass is not simply granted because someone works in technology. The person must fit an approved Top-Tier track and recommendation/verification process.

Fast electronic handling

Current Ministry of Justice material describes a streamlined online process for qualifying Top-Tier applicants and a target of rapid processing after the required recommendation and documentation are complete.

This should not be read as a guarantee of approval or a universal processing time for every F-2 application.

Family benefits

The government describes significant family benefits for qualifying F-2-T holders, including:

  • F-2 residence for spouse and minor children;
  • F-1 accompaniment for parents and household help in specified cases; and
  • freer employment rights for the spouse under the accompanying F-2 framework described by the K-Tech Pass material.

The exact family code and evidence should be checked for the applicant's track.

Permanent residence after three years: eligibility, not automatic approval

The Ministry of Justice states that qualifying F-2-T holders can become eligible to apply for permanent residence after three years.

That is an accelerated eligibility point, not automatic F-5. The applicant still has to satisfy the separate permanent-residence requirements that apply at the time of application.

F-2-T versus E-7

A professional hired in Korea who does not meet Top-Tier criteria may instead use an employment route such as E-7. A high salary or senior job title alone does not turn an E-7 case into F-2-T.
