Saint Kitts and Nevis work permit
Most non-nationals who want to take local employment in Saint Kitts and Nevis need a work permit.
Employer-linked process
The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis describes the route as employer-assisted: the worker first obtains a job and then gathers and submits the required work-permit documentation.
The Ministry of National Security has also stated that a work-permit application is for a specialized position and that the applicant should reside outside the Federation when the application is made.
Local recruitment requirement
Before filing, the position must be advertised in local media for three consecutive weeks. The employer is also expected to consult the Labour Department and provide evidence of attempts to fill the vacancy locally.
Non-transferability
Work permits are not transferable between employers. If a permit is rescinded, a later application may be needed for another employer and the worker may be required to leave before that application is made.
Renewal
The Ministry has advised that renewal requests should be filed no later than two weeks before the current permit expires.
CARICOM exception
Qualifying CARICOM skilled nationals can have a different legal path under the CSME regime and may not need a work permit. See the CSME route.
See the Saint Kitts and Nevis hub, Caribbean region, work visas, methodology, and legal disclaimer.
