Switzerland family reunification in 2026
Switzerland does not have one universal family-reunification test. The rules depend on the sponsor's citizenship and residence status.
EU/EFTA sponsors
Family reunification under free movement is distinct from the FNIA rules for third-country sponsors. Eligible family members can include a spouse/recognised partner and, depending on dependency and age, direct descendants or dependent ascendants. Entry-document requirements still depend on the family member's nationality.
Swiss and other resident sponsors
Different federal rules apply to family members of Swiss citizens, C-permit holders, B-permit holders and people with other statuses. Conditions can include the qualifying relationship, suitable housing, financial independence, cohabitation and integration-related requirements.
For several FNIA family categories, statutory time limits matter. SEM notes, for example, that applications for spouses and minor children in covered categories are generally subject to a five-year period, while children over 12 can face a 12-month period. The exact rule must be checked against the sponsor's status and the child's age.
Family residence and work permission should also be separated: some family members gain broad work rights, while other statuses require additional steps.
