Switzerland settlement C permit in 2026
The C permit is Switzerland's settlement status. It is not the same as an EU permanent-residence card, and the Free Movement Agreement itself does not create the C-permit rules.
SEM describes settlement as arising after five or ten years of residence depending on nationality, treaty/reciprocity arrangements and the applicable legal conditions.
Certain nationals — including citizens of specified EU states and EFTA states — can qualify for settlement after five years of regular and uninterrupted residence under settlement treaties or reciprocal arrangements. Other nationals generally face a longer baseline.
Swiss law also allows early C-permit consideration after five years in certain cases of successful integration, subject to the applicable statutory and cantonal assessment. This must not be presented as a universal automatic five-year route.
The C permit gives an unlimited right of residence, but administrative control/renewal formalities still exist. Citizenship is a separate process: ordinary naturalisation generally requires its own residence and integration conditions and a C permit.
