Burundi Immigration for Workers, Entrepreneurs and Remote Professionals in 2026

Burundi separates entry visas, work authorization, longer residence and business registration. A business registration is not a work permit, and a normal entry visa is not a remote-work permit.

Work permits and short assignments

Burundi's 2022 employment ordinance regulates foreign workers and EAC citizens. It distinguishes a work permit for employment lasting more than 90 days from a special work authorization for work lasting 90 days or less. The ordinance also sets filing deadlines and document requirements.

Establishment visa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes a Visa d'établissement. Its public checklist includes an approved request to the Commissioner General for Migration, passport/current-visa copies, a passport photo, at least six months already spent in Burundi, employment evidence for company employees, or NIF plus trade-register evidence for lucrative activity.

The published fee is USD 500 and the published validity is two years.

Entrepreneurs and investors

Burundi does not publish a separate startup visa. Foreign founders can register a business through the Burundi Development Agency, but registration does not itself create residence or work rights.

The employment ordinance also contains a permanent-work-permit provision for a qualifying foreign/EAC investor or representative whose presence is justified by supervising invested capital. That is a work-authorization concept, not citizenship by investment or automatic permanent immigration residence.

Remote workers and freelancers

Burundi has no dedicated remote-worker visa. Short-stay or multiple-entry status should not be treated as a general authorization to work online.

Freelancers likewise have no standalone national freelancer visa. A genuine business operator may need business registration, NIF, establishment status and the correct work authorization depending on the facts.

Entry visa basics

Official tourism guidance currently lists a transit visa at USD 40 for 72 hours, an entry visa at USD 70 per month, and a multiple-entry visa at USD 90 per month. These are entry-visa fees, not work-permit or establishment-visa fees.

Residence card

The Ministry of Finance published a new 2026/2027 ordinance regulating the secure residence card for foreigners living in Burundi. Because it is newer than earlier 2025/2026 instruments, older residence-card prices should not be reused as current without verifying the latest ordinance.
