Burundi Freelancer and Self-Employment Immigration in 2026
Burundi does not publish a standalone national freelancer visa or generic self-employment visa.
A foreign independent professional has to separate business registration, immigration residence and work authorization.
Business registration
The Burundi Development Agency allows registration of a physical-person business as well as a legal-person company. A foreign applicant can use a passport or residence card as identity evidence.
That registration creates the commercial business. It is not an immigration permit.
Establishment visa
For a lucrative activity, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs establishment-visa checklist asks for:
- a Tax Identification Number (NIF); and
- trade-register evidence.
The same visa page requires at least six months already spent in Burundi and lists two-year validity.
Does business registration remove the work-permit question?
Not automatically.
The 2022 employment ordinance regulates foreign work and EAC workers. The exact treatment of an individual owner personally performing services depends on the legal form and real activity.
A genuine investor or representative may fit the investor permanent-work-permit provision, but that is not a generic freelancer permit.
Foreign clients do not create a nomad exemption
Serving only clients outside Burundi does not create an official digital-nomad or freelancer exemption in the sources reviewed.
A contractor physically working from Burundi should not rely only on an entry visa or the fact that customers are overseas.

Burundi has no separate national startup visa. A freelancer who forms a company follows the normal business-registration, immigration and work-authorization framework.

NIF/trade registration can support a lucrative-activity establishment-visa application, but tax registration does not itself settle immigration status.
