Autonomous Work and Professional Services Residence in Ecuador in 2026
Ecuador has a specific temporary-residence category for trabajo autónomo, servicios profesionales, civiles, de consultoría o por carta de auspicio. The official procedure describes a two-year, multiple-entry residence for foreign nationals carrying out qualifying independent or service activity.
Evidence of the activity
The applicant must show the legal basis for the activity. Depending on the case, the regulations call for items such as a notarized professional/civil/consulting services contract, a qualifying RUC where applicable to a resident changing category, or a municipal operating permit. An autonomous worker must additionally provide the evidence required by the regulation, which can include a notarized sworn declaration with photographic evidence of the planned activity or qualifying property/lease evidence for the place where the activity will occur.
A tourist cannot begin non-tourist economic activity merely because an application is planned. The official page expressly states that a tourist may not perform activity other than tourism until the migration category has been changed.
Founder and freelancer fit
This is the most direct general category for a freelancer, consultant or self-employed service provider whose Ecuador activity fits the official criteria. It is different from Investor Residence, which depends on a qualifying investment, and from Professional / Technician Residence, which depends on professional/technical credentials and registration.
The visa is immigration permission, not automatic professional licensure, municipal permission, tax registration or company authorization. Those separate obligations depend on the actual activity.
Filing
The current official procedure uses e-VISAS and states up to two years of temporary residence. General documents include a valid passport, criminal-record evidence and lawful means of support.
