Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services in 2026
This status of residence covers a large share of professional foreign employment in Japan, including many engineers, software professionals, interpreters, designers, language instructors, marketing specialists and other jobs requiring qualifying technical, humanities or international-service skills.
A Japanese contracting organization is required
The permitted activity must be based on a contract with a public or private organization in Japan. This is not an open work permit and does not authorize unrestricted freelancing outside the permitted activity.
The work must fit the status
ISA defines the status around work requiring knowledge or skills in natural sciences, engineering, humanities, or sensitivity grounded in foreign culture.
The applicant's academic or professional background must generally relate to the work. JETRO's official guidance describes common qualification routes such as relevant university-level study or substantial relevant professional experience. Certain specified IT examinations/qualifications can also affect the analysis for IT professionals.
Equal-remuneration principle
The employment conditions must satisfy the applicable immigration criteria, including remuneration comparable to a Japanese worker performing similar work.
Duration
The official status list provides periods such as 5 years, 3 years, 1 year or 3 months, depending on the immigration decision.
Changing employers or activities
A job change does not automatically mean the same status remains appropriate. If the new role no longer fits Engineer/Humanities/International Services, a change of status may be required.
ISA also requires relevant notifications when the affiliated organization changes.
Student graduates
International students in Japan commonly use this status after graduation when they obtain qualifying professional work. The change from Student to work status is a separate immigration application and should be completed before beginning activity that requires the new work status.
