Japan Highly Skilled Professional and J-Skip in 2026

Japan has two related ways to qualify as a highly skilled professional: the ordinary points-based Highly Skilled Professional framework and the J-Skip special highly skilled system.

Ordinary HSP uses points

The ordinary framework evaluates factors such as academic background, professional experience, age, annual income and other qualifying achievements. A total of 70 points or more is the standard threshold for Highly Skilled Professional recognition.

The status is divided by activity type, including advanced academic research, advanced specialized/technical activity and advanced business/management activity.

J-Skip does not use the normal point calculation

J-Skip was introduced as a separate eligibility route for applicants with particularly strong academic/professional backgrounds and high income.

For advanced academic research or advanced specialized/technical activity, the current JETRO summary states that the applicant can qualify with either:

  • a master's degree or higher and annual income of at least JPY 20 million; or
  • at least 10 years of relevant professional experience and annual income of at least JPY 20 million.

For advanced business/management activity, the current threshold includes at least 5 years of relevant professional experience and annual income of at least JPY 40 million.

Preferential treatment

Highly skilled status can provide immigration advantages such as broader permitted activities, priority processing and more flexible family arrangements, depending on the category.

JETRO states that a person admitted under J-Skip can change to Highly Skilled Professional (ii) after one year if the separate requirements are met. HSP(ii) offers an indefinite period of stay and a wider activity range.

Permanent residence can be accelerated

Highly skilled applicants may qualify for accelerated permanent residence. Japan's 2026 PR guidelines retain the framework under which 70-point highly skilled applicants can potentially qualify after three years and 80-point applicants after one year. J-Skip / special highly skilled applicants can also fit the one-year accelerated framework when the PR requirements are satisfied.
