Japan immigration and visa options in 2026

Japan uses activity-based statuses of residence rather than one general visa for anyone who wants to live and work in the country. The correct route depends on what you will actually do in Japan, who you will work for, whether you are starting a business, whether your stay is short-term remote work, and whether your eventual goal is permanent residence.

Digital Nomad is short-term and narrow

Japan has a dedicated Designated Activities status for eligible digital nomads. It allows qualifying international remote work for six months, cannot be extended, requires at least JPY 10 million annual income, and requires private medical/travel insurance with at least JPY 10 million treatment coverage. It does not permit ordinary employment or contracting with a Japanese entity.

Business Manager changed significantly in late 2025

Older pages that still describe a JPY 5 million capital threshold are stale for new applications. The revised Business Manager rules effective 16 October 2025 include a JPY 30 million business-assets/capital standard and at least one qualifying full-time employee, plus current office, language and applicant-qualification requirements. Existing holders have transitional treatment, so the new-entry rules should not be applied mechanically to every renewal.

Founder routes are different from one another

The Startup Visa is a preparation framework that can allow an eligible founder to work toward the Business Manager requirements under an approved support organization for up to two years. It is not automatic Business Manager approval.

J-Find is different again: it targets recent graduates of qualifying highly ranked overseas universities who want to job-hunt or prepare a startup in Japan.

Highly skilled routes can accelerate permanent residence

Japan's ordinary Highly Skilled Professional framework uses points. J-Skip is a special highly skilled pathway based on specified academic/professional background and high income rather than the normal point calculation. Highly skilled applicants can also have accelerated permanent-residence options, including one-year and three-year pathways where the separate PR rules are met.

Skilled employment remains activity-based

For many engineers, software professionals, designers, interpreters, marketers and other professional workers, the relevant status is Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services. The job, education or experience and Japanese contracting organization must fit the status.

Intra-company Transferee is designed for qualifying temporary transfers from an overseas office to a related Japanese office and is not interchangeable with Business Manager.

Visa, Certificate of Eligibility and status of residence are not the same thing

A Certificate of Eligibility can support the visa and landing process, but it is not the same as a visa, landing permission, a residence card or permanent residence. The legal status granted in Japan controls the activities the person may perform.
