Norway self-employed skilled-worker permit in 2026
Norway does not offer a broad startup visa that allows any founder to relocate simply by forming a company. UDI instead has a narrow self-employed skilled-worker category.
The business must normally be the applicant's own sole proprietorship; a limited company does not normally satisfy this route. It must be necessary for the establishment and continued operation of the business that the applicant lives in Norway and actively participates in it.
The work performed in the business must require the applicant's skilled-worker qualifications. UDI currently requires it to be probable that the business will produce at least NOK 341,373 per year pre-tax in business profit. Where the activity needs a public authorization or permit, that authorization must also be in place or expected.
The holder can work only in the approved business and cannot take other work, including separate remote work. The permit can normally be granted for one year at a time. It can form a basis for permanent residence after three years if the separate settlement requirements are met. Family members can normally apply for family immigration.
Registering a company with the Brønnøysund Register Centre does not itself grant immigration permission.
