Employer-Sponsored Work Residence in Panama in 2026
Panama generally separates SNM residence status from MITRADEL authorization for local employment. Official categories include ordinary foreign employees within the 10% workforce quota and technical or specialist personnel under the distinct 15% mechanism. These classifications have different employer and occupational requirements.
Employer and worker evidence
MITRADEL's Type 2A checklist calls for the worker's immigration documentation and the employer's payroll or social-security evidence. The specialist category can require additional proof of expertise or qualifications. An offer letter by itself does not complete either the immigration or labor-authority process. Verify the employer's workforce composition, wages, legal registration and the actual job before applying.
Do not confuse visa and permit
A residence card does not automatically grant local employment rights. Similarly, the remote-worker short-stay visa authorizes only the foreign-facing activity specified in that programme. Nationals eligible for Friendly Nations residence still need the appropriate work authorization when taking local employment.
Professional restrictions
Some professions are restricted by law to Panamanian nationals. A technical job title or foreign degree does not override a reserved profession. Compare foreign professional residence. Verify the legal requirements with SNM and MITRADEL, not an undated generic 'Panama work visa' advertisement.
