Peru Rentista Residence in 2026
Peru's Rentista category is a residence route for a foreign national who receives a pension or permanent income from a Peruvian or foreign source. It is most relevant to retirees and people genuinely living from stable passive income.
Income requirement
For foreign-source income, Migraciones currently asks for a document from the source country showing net permanent income of at least US$1,000 per month. The applicant also makes a declaration that the funds enter Peru through a bank or financial institution supervised by Peru's SBS.
For Peruvian-source permanent income, the official procedure asks for evidence of the permanent monthly income but the page does not publish the same US$1,000 wording for that situation.
The key concept is permanent income. A temporary project fee, irregular freelance revenue or speculative investment return should not automatically be treated as qualifying rentista income.
Initial application
The official initial procedure says the applicant must be outside Peru to obtain the immigration category. It requires a current passport and background certificates covering the relevant preceding five-year residence history, together with evidence of the qualifying pension or permanent income.
On the official procedure page checked 7 October 2026, the published fee is S/58.80 and the attention period is 30 business days. Always recheck the live payment information before filing.
Is Rentista permanent?
The current Migration Law describes Rentista as having an indefinite period of stay. Migraciones' in-country change procedure likewise says the category grants indefinite stay in Peru.
That is different from many other Peru resident categories that require periodic residence extensions. Identity-document renewal can still apply even where the underlying immigration residence is indefinite.
Can a remote worker use Rentista?
Do not assume so. Rentista is based on pension or permanent income; it is not Peru's digital-nomad category and should not be used to recharacterize active employment or client work as passive income.
A remote employee should review the actual Digital Nomad Status, including its current implementation problem. A professional providing services under a Peru-side relationship should compare Worker Residence.
Tax still needs separate analysis
An immigration category does not decide tax residence or the tax character of income. Peru's tax rules use separate domicile and source tests. Long-term residents should obtain tax advice on pensions, investment income, foreign-source income and reporting obligations.
