Research and Tertiary Education in Slovenia in 2026

Slovenia has a dedicated temporary-residence framework for qualifying research and tertiary-education activity based on the relevant hosting or institutional arrangement.

The permit may be extended multiple times, with extensions of up to 2 years where the legal conditions continue to be met.

Research status versus employment

Current Infotujci guidance distinguishes the research/tertiary-education residence basis from an ordinary employment relationship. A holder may carry out the qualifying research work under the permit, but an ordinary employment relationship requires the appropriate single residence and work permit.

After completing qualifying research activity, an eligible researcher may apply for the residence permit for seeking employment or self-employment before the research permit expires.
