South Africa immigration and residence options in 2026

South Africa currently combines a Remote Work Visitor Visa, points-based skilled work routes, employer transfer/corporate mechanisms, a Business Visa framework and separate family/study/permanent-residence categories.

Remote work

The Remote Work Visitor Visa is tied to employment by a foreign employer. Current DHA requirements use a gross annual salary threshold of R650,796 and allow stays over three months up to three years.

Skilled employment

The General Work Visa and Critical Skills Work Visa use the current 100-point framework but remain distinct legal categories. Intra-company transfer is separate again.

Founders and business owners

The current-law founder/investor route remains the Business Visa. There is no general startup or freelancer visa today; see entrepreneur and founder options.

The March 2026 final revised White Paper proposes major future reforms, but proposed skilled-worker/investment models are not yet substitutes for current law.
