Entrepreneur and Founder Options in South Africa in 2026
South Africa does not currently operate a broad standalone national startup visa or generic freelancer visa under current law.
Founder route today
A founder who will establish or invest in a South African business generally needs to assess the current Business Visa framework and its capital, staffing, registration and national-interest requirements. The March 2026 final revised White Paper confirms that the startup visa concept is currently incorporated into Business Visa requirements, including the possibility of applying for a capital waiver where the applicant does not have the ordinary minimum capital contribution; a separate standalone startup visa is planned for future legislation.
A foreign founder employed by an overseas company who merely works remotely from South Africa may instead fit the Remote Work Visitor Visa—but only where the foreign-employment model and its requirements are genuinely satisfied.
Do not treat proposals as current visas
The Work Visa Review recommended startup-oriented reforms, and the March 2026 White Paper proposes a future standalone startup visa and broader investment-visa reform. Those proposals do not replace the current Business Visa framework today.
Founders should distinguish company incorporation from immigration permission: registering a South African company does not itself confer residence or work authorization.
