Barbados Work Permits in 2026
Barbados Immigration states that non-nationals who want to work in Barbados must register with Immigration before commencing employment. The current system separates short-term/training permissions from long-term work permits.
Short-term work permit
A short-term permit is valid for up to 11 months. The employer or sponsor applies on behalf of the worker. Immigration's current checklist asks for:
- a detailed cover letter from the prospective employer;
- Form C-3;
- four passport-size photographs; and
- a copy of the passport bio-data page.
A training attachment uses the same core documents and Immigration says it does not carry a final fee.
The Department currently operates an appointment system for short-term applications. Each applicant needs an appointment and must bring the confirmation and required originals/copies.
Long-term work permit
Long-term permits can be valid for up to three years. The key labour-market rule is explicit: the prospective employer must sufficiently prove that no resident or Barbadian national is capable and willing to fulfil the position.
Current long-term documents include Forms C-1/C-2, a medical form (with required X-ray report), four photos, two character references, qualifications, passport copy and a detailed employer letter explaining the business, role, employment period and reason for the request.
Entrepreneurs and business owners
Barbados does not need to be described with an invented “startup visa.” The official long-term work-permit page directly addresses an entrepreneur desirous of establishing a business in Barbados. Immigration asks that entrepreneur for:
- proof of transferred investment funds consistent with Central Bank rules;
- Certificate of Registration / Articles of Incorporation; and
- relevant business licences.
This is important: incorporating or buying a business is not itself a work permit. A founder who will actively work/manage locally should structure the immigration permission around the actual role.
Fees
The current Immigration page publishes a BDS $300 application fee. The final fee is not one flat amount: it varies by employment category and permit length under the International Standard Code fee regulations.

Family
Barbados' extension-of-stay page expressly mentions spouses of long-term work permit holders and requires a police certificate of character when they apply for an extension. That confirms family stay can be handled separately from the principal work permit; it does not establish an automatic derivative work right for the spouse.
Changing employment
Because the work permit is tied to the sponsor/employment case, do not assume you can freely change employer, occupation or business activity under an existing permit. Confirm the required new or amended authorization before starting the changed work.
CARICOM exception
Some CARICOM nationals do not use the ordinary work-permit route. Since 1 October 2025, citizens of Barbados, Belize, Dominica and St Vincent and the Grenadines have enhanced free-movement rights among those participating countries.
