Cayman Islands residency for persons of independent means in 2026

The Residency Certificate for Persons of Independent Means is a long-term residence facility for people who can meet prescribed financial-standing requirements without needing Cayman employment.

The certificate should not be marketed as a work visa. The underlying section 41 framework grants residence without the right to work.

Grand Cayman financial standing

Current 2026 regulations require a Grand Cayman applicant to satisfy one of two financial paths:

  1. a continuous source of annual income of at least CI$120,000, without needing Cayman employment; or
  2. at least CI$400,000 in qualifying assets held with a qualifying Cayman-regulated/local licensed institution and at least CI$1,000,000 invested, of which at least CI$500,000 is in developed real estate in Grand Cayman.

Cayman Brac or Little Cayman

For Cayman Brac or Little Cayman, the current alternatives are:

  1. continuous annual income of CI$75,000, without needing Cayman employment; or
  2. at least CI$400,000 in qualifying assets with a qualifying institution and at least CI$500,000 invested, of which at least CI$250,000 is developed real estate in Cayman Brac or Little Cayman.

Duration, presence and annual declarations

The underlying section 41 certificate is a long-duration facility, historically stated as 25 years renewable at the Director of WORC's discretion. Current 2026 declaration rules additionally require holders to confirm ongoing financial standing, adequate health insurance and at least 30 days' physical presence in the preceding calendar year.

Because the framework changed in 2026, applicants should verify the current issue document and conditions rather than relying only on pre-reform summaries.

No right to work

The independent-means residence certificate is not a route for local employment. Someone who wants to work in a Cayman business should assess a work permit, direct-investment certificate, or substantial-business-presence route, depending on the facts.

Verified against the current Cayman regulations and annual-declaration rules on 19 September 2026.
