Dependent Temporary Residence in Chile in 2026
Chile allows qualifying family members to obtain temporary residence in dependent status when they have the required relationship with a person who already holds or is applying for temporary residence as a principal holder.
Who can qualify
The statutory dependent framework includes a spouse or partner and qualifying children, subject to the relationship and age or disability conditions in Chile's migration rules. The dependent permit is linked to the validity of the principal temporary resident's permit.
Work rights
SERMIG expressly states that a person holding temporary residence as a dependant may perform lawful remunerated activities, subject to the general rules governing work by minors.
A dependant may also apply to change to principal-holder status if they independently satisfy the requirements for the relevant temporary-residence subcategory.
Permanent residence
SERMIG states that qualifying dependants can apply for Permanent Residence without being subject to the principal residence-duration calculation when the principal holder has completed the required period and the underlying subcategory admits permanent-residence progression. Specific excluded categories apply.
This route is different from Family Reunification Residence, which is based on a relationship with a Chilean national or definitive resident.
