Cyprus general employment single permit in 2026
The ordinary GEN framework covers remunerated employment by third-country nationals outside the more specialised Foreign Interest Company and EU Blue Card systems.
Entry permission and residence/work permission are separate
For ordinary employment, the Migration Department states that a third-country national generally needs a work-purpose entry permit before entering Cyprus. After arrival, the person must register in the Aliens Register and obtain the temporary residence and employment permit.
A visitor visa is not a substitute for the normal employment-entry procedure.
Employer and labour procedures
Depending on the job category, the employer may also need approval or a sealed employment contract through the Department of Labour or another competent authority. The immigration permit does not eliminate those employer-side requirements.
Permit duration
The Migration Department states that a temporary residence and work permit can be issued for up to three consecutive years.
For many ordinary employment categories the published maximum period of stay for employment purposes is four years, although the official guidance lists exceptions for certain worker categories.
Changing employer
Where the employee and employer mutually terminate the employment contract and complete the release procedure, the official guidance provides a 30-day period in which the worker can look for a new employer and apply to renew the temporary residence and work permit.
This should not be treated as an unrestricted open work permit.
GEN vs other employment routes
GEN is different from:
- Company of Foreign Interests employment, which has a dedicated strategy for qualifying employers and highly paid staff;
- EU Blue Card, which currently applies only in specified high-skilled sectors; and
- Startup Visa, which starts with innovation approval for a qualifying startup.
