Cyprus student residence in 2026
Third-country nationals coming to Cyprus for studies longer than 90 days use the student immigration framework. Admission to an institution and immigration permission are related but separate questions.
Residence permission
The student process requires the immigration application and supporting documents published by the Migration Department. Academic issues can also be referred to the competent education authority.
A student changing institution or programme must continue to satisfy the immigration and academic-progress rules; the Migration Department can refuse renewal where the change appears designed to avoid those requirements.
Student work is restricted
Student residence is not an unrestricted work permit.
The Migration Department states that students can undertake paid economic activity only outside study time and only within the sectors and occupations permitted by the current labour decree.
The maximum work time is:
- 20 hours per week during classes; and
- 38 hours per week during academic breaks.
Before employment starts, the student must have an employment contract with a specific employer and submit it to the District Labour Office for approval together with the study schedule.
Sector and occupation limits matter
The Labour Department publishes the sectors and occupations open to third-country-national students. These can change by decree.
A general statement that "students may work 20 hours" is therefore incomplete: the job itself must also fall within the permitted framework.
Study time and long-term residence
Cyprus long-term resident status generally excludes periods where the person resides as a student or for vocational training from the normal five-year qualifying calculation.
That makes student residence different from a direct settlement route.
Family, tax and employment are separate
Study permission does not automatically give a family member a right to work, and it does not answer tax-residence questions. Those issues need separate analysis under the relevant rules.
