Employee Card in Czechia in 2026
The Employee Card is the standard combined long-term residence route for many third-country nationals taking employment in Czechia for more than three months.
Official Czech guidance states that the card is issued for a maximum of 2 years. It can be extended repeatedly, normally for the period supported by the continuing employment relationship, but each extension remains subject to the statutory two-year maximum.
Depending on the worker's labour-market position, the application may be tied to a vacancy in the central database, to a separate work permit, or to free access to the labour market. Nationals of Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan currently have free access to the Czech labour market, but that does not remove the need for lawful residence.
Do not describe an Employee Card as citizenship, permanent residence or a general freelance permit. Employment authorization and residence status must remain distinct.
