Studies and Student Work in Poland in 2026

Qualifying third-country nationals admitted to full-time higher education or a doctoral school can use Poland's temporary residence permit for studies.

First and subsequent permits

For ordinary university studies, the first permit is generally granted for 15 months, or for the academic year/study period plus 3 months where that period is shorter than 15 months.

Special rules apply to mobility programmes and doctoral schools. Subsequent permits can cover the remaining study period plus three months, generally up to 3 years at a time.

Work and future residence

Student work rights depend on the precise residence basis and current employment rules. The study permit should not be treated as a general business permit.

For long-term EU residence calculations, study periods generally count at one-half, not in full. Graduates of qualifying Polish studies may have access to a separate nine-month post-study permit to look for work or start a business.
