Poland immigration and residence options in 2026

Poland's immigration system uses different legal tracks for ordinary employment, highly qualified work, business activity, study, family life and settlement. The label “Poland work visa” is therefore too broad on its own: a visa, work permit, temporary residence permit and EU Blue Card are legally different tools.

Work and highly skilled employment

The temporary residence and work permit is the main single-permit route for many third-country workers and can be issued for up to three years. Poland's foreign-employment rules changed materially on 1 June 2025 and those reforms remain relevant in 2026.

For highly qualified employment, the EU Blue Card has its own qualification and salary rules. For applications filed in 2026, the current official salary threshold is PLN 160,264.08 gross annually, or more than PLN 13,355.34 gross monthly.

Founders, entrepreneurs and self-employed professionals

Poland has no dedicated startup visa. The relevant residence category is temporary residence for business activity, subject to the business-form rules and statutory economic test.

Company ownership does not itself create a right to reside. Likewise, not every third-country national can use Polish sole-proprietor registration on the same terms as a Polish citizen.

Remote work and digital nomads

Poland currently has no dedicated national digital-nomad permit. The old Poland Business Harbour programme is not an open workaround: MFA suspended its participation in January 2024. Review remote-work and digital-nomad options by matching the real activity to a lawful residence/work basis.

Study, graduates and research

Qualifying students can use study residence. A qualifying Polish graduate can receive a one-time nine-month permit to seek employment or start a business. Researchers have a dedicated scientific-research permit.

Family and settlement

Family reunification depends on both relationship and sponsor status.

For many economic migrants, the principal settlement route is the long-term EU resident permit, generally after five years of qualifying residence. Poland's separate national permanent-residence permit is narrower and reserved for statutory categories.
