Hungary immigration and residence options in 2026

Hungary's post-2024 immigration system uses several highly specific residence categories. A generic phrase such as “Hungary work visa” can hide important differences in nationality eligibility, professional qualifications, family rights, switching rules and long-term-residence options.

Work routes are not interchangeable

The ordinary employment residence permit is currently nationality-restricted under the official rules, while the EU Blue Card and Hungarian Card target highly qualified or specified professional profiles.

A major 2026 change: Hungary stopped accepting new guest-worker residence applications from 6 June 2026 because there are currently no eligible third countries for that specific permit category. This does not mean every Hungarian work-residence route is closed.

Remote workers and self-employed applicants

The White Card is the digital-nomad route for foreign remote employment or foreign business activity. It uses a current income test of EUR 3,000 net per month and has strict limits on Hungarian work/company ownership and family/settlement rights.

Applicants who will genuinely conduct self-employed activity under the Hungarian immigration category should review guest self-employment instead.

Investor residence

The guest investor route, commonly marketed as a Golden Visa, currently uses two official investment bases: EUR 250,000 qualifying fund shares or EUR 1,000,000 qualifying donation. Current OIF guidance does not list the older EUR 500,000 direct-residential-property option.

Study, graduates and family

Students have limited work rights during studies and may move to the graduate job-search/start-business route after qualifying studies. Family reunification is sponsor-status dependent; not every Hungarian permit can sponsor family.

Long-term residence

Hungary distinguishes the National Residence Card and EU Residence Card. The former generally uses a three-year qualifying-residence framework for eligible applicants, while the latter generally uses five years, subject to exclusions and special rules.
