Family Reunification in Hungary in 2026
Hungarian family reunification rules depend heavily on the immigration status of the sponsor.
Sponsor status matters
A family member may qualify when the sponsor holds one of the eligible Hungarian residence or long-term-residence statuses, but not every temporary permit can sponsor ordinary family reunification.
Current OIF guidance specifically excludes family reunification for sponsors holding several categories, including White Card, study status, guest-worker residence and other listed temporary statuses. The ordinary employment residence permit also has its own family restrictions.
By contrast, family applications can be connected to categories such as EU Blue Card, Hungarian Card, National Card, research and guest investor residence where the statutory conditions are met.
Do not infer work or settlement rights
The family member's right to work and the path to long-term residence depend on the precise family permit and sponsor category. Those questions should be checked against the current family factsheet rather than assumed from the sponsor's work rights.
