Employment Residence Visa in Sri Lanka in 2026
Sri Lanka's residence-visa framework includes an Employment Category for specified foreign personnel rather than a single open work visa.
Who the official category covers
The Department lists professional personnel required for government-approved projects, expatriate personnel in Board of Investment projects, personnel employed at banks, and personnel employed by registered private-sector companies or institutions. Colombo Port City employment is handled within the Port City framework.
Recommendation and sponsorship
The required recommendation depends on the employer and sector. BOI cases use BOI documentation and recommendation; private-sector cases require company records and a recommendation from the relevant line ministry; bank cases involve a Central Bank recommendation.
Duration
The Department states that the residence visa is generally valid for one year or the period recommended by the relevant authority and can be renewed, subject to the underlying employment basis and passport validity.
