Sweden EU/EEA right of residence in 2026
EU/EEA citizens use free-movement/right-of-residence rules, not the ordinary third-country work-permit system.
An EU/EEA citizen can work, study, run a business or live in Sweden on sufficient funds without a Swedish residence permit. For the first three months, no special right-of-residence condition beyond valid identity documentation is normally required. To stay longer, the person must meet a right-of-residence basis.
After five years in Sweden with right of residence, an EU/EEA citizen generally gains permanent right of residence.
A non-EU/EEA family member of an EU/EEA citizen with right of residence who plans to stay more than three months generally needs a residence card.
